Plinths and Pedestals were commissioned to create a set of display plinths that looked as though they had been part of their setting for many years. The client wanted the pieces to feel refined, solid and timeless (not new or overly polished). The key aim was to achieve an authentic aged bronze appearance, while maintaining the strength and reliability of steel.
To complement this, we also created a table using liquid copper, applying verdigris to accelerate the development of the blue-green tones that would typically take years to form naturally. The same process was used with bronze, where we applied patina to achieve an antique effect. Although this is a lengthy and intricate process, the resulting finish is truly exceptional.
The plinths were built from mild steel. This material was chosen because it is strong, stable and allows for precise fabrication. Each plinth was cut, welded and finished so that the surfaces were completely clean and smooth. This gave us the best possible foundation for the finishing work.

Instead of using a paint or spray effect, we applied a real bronze liquid metal coating. This means the surface of each plinth is made from actual bronze, not a colour match. Once the bronze metal is applied and cured, it can be worked and aged in the same way as solid bronze.
In addition to bronze and copper, we can offer a wide range of liquid metal finishes, including steel, iron, tin, manganese, brass and many more. These finishes can be further customised as we can force rust or age metals to create bespoke effects that perfectly suit the aesthetic and story of each project.

The patina (the aged look) was created by hand. This involved applying specialist patination solutions to gently oxidise and darken the bronze surface. The finish was built up gradually, layer by layer, to ensure it developed natural depth and variation rather than looking forced or artificial. Areas that would naturally be touched or worn over time were lightly burnished to soften the tone and reveal highlights. Once the patina had reached the right balance of depth and warmth, the surface was sealed to protect it while keeping a natural, low-sheen appearance.

The finished plinths have the weight and character of aged bronze, with subtle tonal shifts and a surface that feels lived-in. The steel structure ensures long-term stability and strength, while the bronze finish provides a rich, historic appearance that will continue to develop gently over time.
